What we do in Stroud

Valley ground is its own trade

Stroud’s gardens hang off hillsides. The Five Valleys give us steep plots where felling room doesn’t exist and trees come down in rigged sections, beech hangers on the brows that are beautiful, shallow-rooted, and unforgiving when neglected, retaining walls and terraces that machinery must respect, and lanes where a 7.5-tonne lorry simply isn’t going. Our crews work this ground constantly: kit is chosen for valley access, quotes are priced with the slope in them, and nobody discovers on the day that the chipper can’t reach the garden.

Mills, commons, and protected trees

Much of Stroud and its valley villages sits in conservation areas, where the council requires six weeks’ written notice before tree works, and the district’s landmark beeches and limes frequently carry Tree Preservation Orders, with fines up to £20,000 per tree for unauthorised work. We check protections on every Stroud quote and handle the paperwork with the district council, a process we know from both sides of the fence. The old mill sites along the Frome bring their own mix: heritage buildings, watercourses, and commercial occupiers, which our commercial teams handle with RAMS and proper scheduling.

Est. 1830, In A Sense

The town that invented the lawnmower

Those same valley mills started something bigger than cloth. In 1830, Thrupp engineer Edwin Beard Budding watched a cross-cutting cylinder trimming the nap off woollen cloth in a Stroud mill and realised the same blades could cut grass. He patented the world’s first lawnmower that year and built it with John Ferrabee at the Phoenix Iron Works in Thrupp, and every mower on every lawn since traces back to this valley.

Nearly two centuries later, the trade Budding started is still worked from the ground it began on. Silver Tree was founded in Stroud, and our crews cut, prune, and maintain the same valleys where grounds care as an industry was born. We’d like to think he’d approve of the kit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Stroud Services

Frequently asked.
Do you really work for Stroud District Council?
Yes. Silver Tree Services delivers grounds and tree work for Stroud District Council, alongside contracts for the NHS and Gloucestershire Police, and it’s the most useful credential a Stroud homeowner can check for: a contractor vetted by the district’s own procurement, working to audited ISO 9001 standards, with insurance and accreditations evidenced. The same crews that work the council’s sites quote and deliver private work across the Five Valleys.
Yes, it’s a Stroud speciality by necessity. Where slopes and terraces leave no felling room, trees are climbed and dismantled in sections, with limbs rigged and lowered under control to protect walls, sheds, and planting below. Silver Tree Services prices valley access honestly at the quote visit, brings kit sized for the lanes and gates the Five Valleys actually have, and protects retaining walls and terraced ground throughout the work.
Often. Stroud’s town centre, Rodborough, Chalford, Painswick, and many valley villages include conservation areas, where Stroud District Council needs six weeks’ written notice before tree works, and significant trees across the district carry Tree Preservation Orders with fines up to £20,000 per tree for unauthorised work. Silver Tree Services checks every address before quoting and submits the notices and applications as part of the job.
Yes. Commercial grounds maintenance runs on contract across the district, offices, mill-site occupiers, schools, and managed properties, with RAMS, accredited teams, and consolidated invoicing, and our commercial tree and survey teams sit under the same contract where wanted. Working for Stroud District Council means Silver Tree Services already meets the compliance bar most district businesses need evidenced, from SSIP accreditation to environmental management under ISO 14001.
All of them. Crews work the full Five Valleys map: Slad, Painswick, Bisley, Chalford, Brimscombe, Minchinhampton, Amberley, Woodchester, Rodborough, and through to Nailsworth, Stonehouse, and Dursley, with the same pricing as the town itself. Silver Tree Services is twenty minutes up the A46 at Shurdington, so the villages see our wagons regularly, and quotes anywhere in the valleys are usually arranged within days: 01242 472560.
