Mills, commons, and protected trees
Est. 1830, In A Sense
The town that invented the lawnmower
Those same valley mills started something bigger than cloth. In 1830, Thrupp engineer Edwin Beard Budding watched a cross-cutting cylinder trimming the nap off woollen cloth in a Stroud mill and realised the same blades could cut grass. He patented the world’s first lawnmower that year and built it with John Ferrabee at the Phoenix Iron Works in Thrupp, and every mower on every lawn since traces back to this valley.
