Honey Fungus: How to Identify It and What to Do

The symptoms that make you suspicious
Before you find the fungus itself, you’ll usually notice the damage: a shrub or tree that fails to leaf in spring or whose leaves are suddenly small and pale, branches dying back, premature autumn colour, bleeding or cracking at the stem base, and, characteristically, plants that die suddenly in hot dry spells, because their rotted roots can no longer supply water. Sometimes a plant declines over years; sometimes an apparently healthy shrub is dead in a season.
The three confirming signs
1. White mycelium under the bark. Peel back a little bark at the base of a dead or dying woody plant (at or just below soil level). Honey fungus shows as sheets of white or creamy fungal tissue between bark and wood, with a strong, distinctly mushroomy smell. This is the most dependable test.
2. Rhizomorphs, the “bootlaces”. Black or dark reddish-brown root-like strands, flattened or rounded, found under dead bark and spreading through the surrounding soil. These are how the fungus travels, growing through soil from an infected stump or root system to reach new victims, potentially several metres per year.
3. Autumn toadstools. Clumps of honey- to tawny-coloured mushrooms with a fibrous ring on the stem, appearing at the base of infected plants or over buried infected roots, usually September to November. Toadstools are seasonal and not always produced, so their absence proves nothing; the white sheets and bootlaces are the diagnosis.
What honey fungus attacks
A depressingly broad menu: privet, lilac, apple, birch, willow, cedar, viburnum, wisteria, roses, hedging conifers, and dozens more, with some species (yew, box elder, and a list of others) showing useful resistance. Infected stumps and dead root systems are its fortress: the fungus can live in a buried root plate for decades, sending rhizomorphs outward the whole time.
What actually works (and what doesn't)
No chemical control exists. Nothing you can legally buy treats honey fungus, and anything sold suggesting otherwise is parting you from money. Control is physical:
- Remove the food source. Dig out or grind out infected stumps and as much root material as practical. This is the single most effective action: no host wood, no fortress. - Remove infected plants promptly, with as much root as possible, and don't replant a susceptible species into the same hole
- Physical barriers can work for precious borders: heavy-duty plastic sheeting buried vertically to around 45cm can block rhizomorph spread, though it's a commitment to install
- Replant smart. Choose more resistant species for affected areas and keep new plants vigorous: stressed plants are the fungus's preferred victims
- Don't spread it. Avoid moving infected wood, roots, or chip from a known-infected plant around the garden
One myth to retire: ordinary woodchip mulch from a healthy tree is not how honey fungus arrives. The fungus travels through soil contact and root contact from established infections, not through clean chip.
When to get professional help
If a mature tree near your house shows basal symptoms, that’s a structural question as well as a horticultural one: honey fungus rots the roots and butt, which is exactly the failure mode that drops whole trees in storms. Get it assessed.
