Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal: Which Do You Need?

What stump grinding actually is

A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning, toothed cutting wheel that’s worked back and forth across the stump, reducing it and the major surface roots to chips, typically 150 to 300mm below ground level, deeper where needed. The chips and soil mix backfills the hole, or gets removed and replaced with topsoil. A typical garden stump takes well under an hour of grinding, machines exist that fit through a standard garden gate, and the lawn two metres away never knows anything happened.

What’s left behind: the deeper root system, dead, severed from the crown it would regrow from, quietly rotting into the soil over the following years. That’s not a compromise; it’s how the method is designed to work.

What stump removal involves

Full removal means excavating around the stump, severing the laterals, and hauling the root ball out with an excavator or winch. It removes everything, and it costs you accordingly: a crater-sized hole needing imported backfill, machine access across your garden, churned ground, typically several times the price of grinding, and a day instead of an hour. For a mature tree, the root plate can be enormous.

Head to head

Cost. Grinding typically runs £100 to £450 per stump in Gloucestershire. Full excavation is usually several times that once machine hire, labour, cartage, and backfill are counted.

Garden damage. Grinding is localised to the stump’s footprint. Excavation tears up access routes and leaves a substantial hole.

Speed. Grinding: under an hour for most garden stumps. Removal: hours to a full day.

Completeness. Removal takes everything; grinding leaves deep roots to decay. For lawns, borders, and ornamental planting, that difference is academic.

Regrowth. Both methods kill the tree. Grinding destroys the root crown, which is where resprouting species like willow, sycamore, and leylandii regenerate from, so the “grinding lets it grow back” worry is a myth.

When grinding is the right call (most of the time)

You're returfing, planting beds, or replanting shrubs and small trees nearby
The stump is a trip hazard, an eyesore, or in the way of a fence line
Access is tight: terraced garden, narrow gate, through-house route
You want the cheapest, cleanest end to the tree's story
Honey fungus is a worry: grinding removes the main food source (deeper infected roots can be chased with a deeper grind)

When full removal earns its cost

The same logic applies. Trees host nests from the obvious (woodpigeons, magpies) to the easily missed (treecreepers behind bark, owls in cavities), and tree surgeons should check before climbing or cutting in season.
